🚗 Day 1: The Journey West & A Dutch Welcome
On the Road – Taking It Easy
We began our drive along Interstate 76, easing into the trip with a relaxed mindset. A quick fuel stop early on, and then we let the road guide us.
Rather than pushing straight through, we paused midway at Farmington Hills—a stop that added unexpected depth to the journey.🛕 A Meaningful Break in Farmington Hills
Our visit to the peaceful Sringeri Vidya Bharati Foundation Temple offered a quiet reset.
Calm surroundings, a moment to stretch, and a sense of stillness—this wasn’t just a break, it was a pause that grounded the trip. Before continuing, we picked up some Indian snacks nearby, bringing a bit of home onto the road.
🌅 Arrival in Holland
The drive, stretching about 6–7 hours, felt surprisingly light thanks to the leisurely pace.Arriving in the second week of May meant one big advantage—daylight stretching past 8 PM. After checking into our stay just a few miles from downtown, we headed out again, eager for our first glimpse of the festival.
🌷 Downtown Holland – First Impressions
Walking through Downtown Holland felt like stepping into a celebration in full bloom.
Tulips lined the streets, storefronts buzzed with energy, and the entire town carried a festive charm.👞 Dutch Street Dancing – A Cultural Highlight
As we explored, we came across one of the most memorable moments of the trip—authentic Dutch klompen dancing performed right on the streets.
The rhythmic tapping of wooden shoes, traditional attire, and the lively crowd created an atmosphere that felt both cultural and intimate. It wasn’t staged behind tickets or barriers—it was right there, woven into the streets, welcoming everyone.
A perfect introduction to the spirit of Tulip Time.
🌇 A Gentle Close to Day 1
We wrapped up our evening just before sunset, with golden light reflecting off rows of tulips and brick-lined streets.
No rushing. No overplanning.
Just a soft, beautiful start to our Holland experience.
🌅 Day 2: Windmills, Tulips & the Road Back
A Calm Morning Start
Day two began just as gently. No early alarms—just a relaxed start to the morning before heading to one of Holland’s most iconic spots.🌷 Windmill Island Gardens – The Heart of Tulip Time
Our first stop was Windmill Island Gardens, and it quickly became the highlight of the trip.Morning brought:
-
Fewer crowds
-
Crisp spring air
-
Tulips at their freshest
With vibrant fields stretching out beneath the historic windmill, the setting felt almost surreal.
We took our time:
-
Walking through the gardens
-
Capturing photos without crowds
-
Letting the kids explore freely
It was less about sightseeing and more about being present in the moment.
🌸 Wrapping Up Holland
By late morning, we felt fulfilled—not rushed, not tired.
Instead of trying to squeeze in more, we chose to leave just before noon, carrying the calm and color of the morning with us.
🚗 The Return Journey
The drive back felt quieter, more reflective. Road trips have a way of shifting tone on the return—less anticipation, more appreciation.
🛕 A Second Pause – Familiar and New
We stopped again at Sringeri Vidya Bharati Foundation Temple, this time with intention rather than convenience.
And just nearby, we explored ISKCON Detroit.
The contrast was beautiful:
-
The serene stillness of Sringeri
-
The devotional vibrancy of ISKCON
Together, they added a meaningful cultural layer to the journey—bridging continents in a single afternoon.
🌇 Back to Pennsylvania
From there, we continued our drive back to Wexford, closing the loop on a trip that felt both short and deeply fulfilling.
🌿 Conclusion: More Than Just a Festival
This wasn’t just a visit to see tulips.
It was:
-
A leisurely road trip
-
A blend of Dutch and Indian cultural experiences
-
A reminder that slowing down often leads to richer travel
Holland gave us color and charm.
The road gave us space to breathe.
And the moments in between made it all memorable.
